All about me
I started as a 17 year old riding in local time trials then quickly progressed to bigger and better races over the next 3 years, culminating in my selection for the Moscow Olympics in 1980 where I placed 6th in the Individual Pursuit and 5th in the Team Pursuit.
I then moved to France, where I raced for one year with ACBB before I turned Pro for Peugeot in 1982. My career as a professional cyclist lasted 15 years during which I achieved numerous results including stage wins in the Vuelta a Espana (Tour of Spain) and the Tour de France. As a rider, my highlight was to wear the Yellow Jersey in 1994. |
After I got off the bike, I moved onto a 15 year career in team management.
As a Lead Director Sportive my biggest achievements were two Giro d'Italia wins (with Paolo Savoldelli - Discovery Channel and Alberto Contador - Astana) and one Tour de France win (with Sir Bradley Wiggins at Team Sky). Guiding Sir Bradley Wiggins from the Team GB car to his win at the 2012 Olympic Time Trial was a real high point. I began coaching riders whilst I was still a Director Sportive, and worked with many professional riders in the various teams, as well as coaching non-professional riders on the side. |
After I retired from professional sport, I became a full-time coach and, although I was once again lured back to the glamour of the World Tour with Tinkoff in 2015/16, I continued to coach, going full-time again in 2017. I'm now involved in performance management with professional cycling team Eolo-Kometa and limit my personal coaching to ensure my riders always get my best attention.
During my 10+ years as a coach, my riders have had many successes on the road and track. I really enjoy the planning, working together for a common goal and the pre-race anticipation. But it's the personal interaction with real people who share a love of cycling that really motivates me - although nothing can beat the buzz of a win, no matter what level the race is. |
I want to share with you my knowledge gained from those early morning time trial starts as a novice right through to the immense pressure of being on the Olympic stage with a Gold Medal favourite on home soil.
