Professional cyclist
I was a European professional from 1982 to 1996. I rode for four teams: Peugeot 1982-1986; Fagor 1987-1988; 7-Eleven 1989-1990; and Motorola 1991-1996. My biggest wins included a time trial stage of the Tour de France (1988), a stage win in the Tour of Spain (1988), the Tour of Belgium (1989), the GP Eddy Merckx time trial (1989), and the USPRO champs (1994). I wore the yellow jersey in the 1994 Tour de France — only the third British rider to do so after Tom Simpson and Chris Boardman. Paris-Roubaix was one of my favourite Classics and I had placings of 5th (1994), 8th (1993), 11th (1995) and 13th (1992). I was second in the 1989 Ghent-Wevelgem. I finished the Tour de France 12 times from 15 starts. My 12 finishes ranks me 15th in the all-time finisher’s list.

Amateur cyclist
During my short amateur career in the UK and France I rode for East Grinstead CC, Archer RC, '34 Nomads and the ACBB in Paris. I was national pursuit and 25-mile champion in 1980, the same year I set competition record for 10 miles (19-44). In my final year as an amateur I won the GP de France TT and was third in the amateur GP des Nations.

After I retired in 1996 I continued racing as an amateur with Team Clean and In-Gear RT. Since then I’ve set PB’s for 10-miles in 19-07, 25-miles in 46-57, 50-miles in 1-43-33, 100-miles in 3-30-49 and 12-hours (comp record) on a tandem with Zak Carr with 304.6m. I won the national 50-mile TT champs in 1997. I won about 10 races last year.
